Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus
Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus has a great design and feels comfortable in the hand. It has a large, colorful, and responsive display. There's a good mix of front and back cameras. It doesn't skimp on quality, but it doesn't break any barriers either (for that, see the S22 Plus).
From the Samsung Galaxy S22 trio of smartphones, we can tell even at this early stage that the Galaxy S22 Plus 5G is the one you should choose.
The 6.6-inch Galaxy S22 Plus differs slightly from the 6.1-inch Galaxy S22, which is less powerful and features fewer features.
Samsung's new Android phones each contain their own strengths (especially the Ultra's 10X optical zoom and fully integrated S-Pen), but none of them represent a significant departure from the strategy it outlined with the S21 series last year.

The Design

In the S21, there were still subtle curves on the back of the glass-and-aluminum chassis, but now they are gone. With Gorilla Glass Victus Plus on both the front and back of the Galaxy S22 Plus (and S22) and a raised contour holding the phone's three cameras, the Galaxy S22 is virtually unchanged from last year's model. It's growing on us, we'll admit that.
The front and back of the shield are sandwiched by an armor aluminum frame. With its shiny metal band, the phone looks almost like an earlier Galaxy S series device, but in the best possible way.
Despite its rigidity, the device feels comfortable to hold, rigid but not harsh to the touch. Samsung might have shrunk the phone just a bit because of that last bit. Samsung's Galaxy S22 Plus measures 157.4 x 75.8 x 7.8mm, whereas the Galaxy S21 Plus measures 161.5 x 75.6 x 7.8mm. As a result, the phone is now thinner, shorter, and a little wider. It has also lost six grams by weighing 196 grams, as well.
Other than that, the design and build are nothing to write home about. There are no changes to the volume or power buttons. On the metal frame, there is a noticeable cutout for the antenna. On the bottom edge, there is the stereo speaker grille, a USB-C port, and a SIM card slot. Samsung's Galaxy S22 Plus is IP68 rated, so it can survive an extended stay in a few feet of water as well as dust.

The Display

The AMOLED display's resolution is slightly lower than the S21 Plus's - 2340 x 1080 - but its pixel
density won't change much.
The Galaxy S22 Plus allows you to vary your refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz. This means that the screen can update at a faster rate when needed (for games, videos, fast scrolling through websites) and can damp it down when not needed (for example, when reading text on a static screen). Longer battery life is the obvious benefit here.
Flipping through various Samsung OneUI 4.1 screens feels smooth as butter, and the screen is bright, colorful, and crisp.
We took advantage of the fingerprint reader under the display for a quick test drive. This Galaxy phone has a larger reader than previous Galaxy phones, which makes initial fingerprint registration and subsequent scanning easier than ever before. In less than 30 seconds, we registered one thumb, and it was used to unlock the phone instantly and repeatedly.

The Cameras

One of those edge-to-edge displays has a small drill-through hole for the front-facing 40MP camera - a significant upgrade from the S21 Plus's 10MP camera. The two cameras offer the same 80-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture. These 40 pixels are not binned to produce a potentially higher-quality 10 or 12 MP image; instead, they are displayed as individual pixels. Using the upgraded Portrait mode, we took some selfies with it and were impressed by the results.
On the back of the phone is a triple camera setup: a 12MP sensor with a 120-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture, a 50MP sensor with an 85-degree field of view, and a telephoto 10MP sensor with a 3x optical zoom.
The S21 Plus's 3x optical zoom is just as good as the S21 Telephoto. With 30X space zoom, you can get much, much closer to your subject through a combination of digital zoom and image processing. It pales in comparison to the 10x optical zoom and 100X space zoom of the new Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which really blew our minds.
A total of eight cameras are built into the Galaxy S21 Plus, including a 12MP wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a 64MP, 3x optical telephoto lens. To find out just how well the S22 Plus cameras compare to their predecessors, we'll have to wait for our full tests.
By combining four pixels at a time into a better whole, Samsung's 50MP camera uses tetra-binning technology for even better visual results, while also combining that image information with the original high-resolution image.
As part of its new imaging technology, Samsung promises something it calls 'Nightography.' It's a total marketing ploy, but in practice, the technology makes shots easier in low-light and at night, with no tripod required. It was not possible for us to test this during our hands-on test, but we are looking forward to taking our review unit into the high, dark hills.
In terms of videos, the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus is ready to shoot up to 8K video at 24fps with the rear cameras, and up to 4K video at 60fps with the front camera. Video can also be captured in portrait mode using the cameras. In the coming days, we will evaluate it in comparison to Apple's impressive iPhone 13 Cinematic mode video.

Performance and battery life

Samsung claims the S22 Plus has a noticeable performance and graphics boost over the S21 line's CPUs because it has the same Snapdragon 4nm Octa-Core processor as the rest of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus line. The benchmarking software could not be installed, so we were unable to test those claims.
Customers outside the USA will receive Samsung's own Exynos CPU, which promises the same performance as the 4nm version. Each chip comes with 8GB of RAM, as well as 128GB or 256GB of storage. We're left wondering why there isn't an upgradeable microSD card slot or the option to buy at least a 512GB version since these specs are unchanged from the S21 Plus.
It comes down to a few key specs that make the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus a better fit for you than the Samsung Galaxy S22. In addition to screen size, Verizon and AT&T recently rolled out 5G Ultra-wideband (UWB) networks in the US, such as WiFi 6E. There is no UWB on the S22.
The battery is also there. It has a battery capacity of 4500mAh good for games, making it slightly smaller than the S21 Plus (4800mAh), but larger than the S22's 3700mAh pack.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus price and release date

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus is priced at $999.99 / £949 (approximately AU$1,450) and includes 128GB of storage capacity (though Samsung will upgrade the storage capacity on initial orders to 256GB) and 8GB of memory.
