SAMSUNG

When it comes to technology, there’s a no bigger name than Samsung. With business interests in smartphones, computers, televisions, watches, refrigerators, and even appliances, Samsung covers the gamut of modern electronics and home automation. The company traces its roots all the way back to 1938 in Seoul, South Korea when Byung-Chull Lee founded the Samsung Trading Company with money he earned from selling dried fish. To learn more about how this iconic company got started, as well as how it has grown into one of the biggest tech companies in the world today, read on!

Samsung company history

Samsung began as a small trading company in 1938, founded by Lee Byung-Chul in southern Korea. In 1947, it was renamed Samsung (meaning tristar or three stars) and expanded into various businesses including food processing, textiles, insurance, securities, and retail. It established several manufacturing facilities in South Korea during the 1960s and 1970s. Around that time Samsung Heavy Industries was also built up as a shipbuilder through contracts from foreign shipping companies.[3] Samsung entered the electronics industry in the late 1960s and constructed its first production plant for televisions in 1968. The company's first product was a black-and-white television set. Further expansion occurred in 1969 with the founding of Samsung Electronics Company Ltd. In 1975, Samsung Group established another subsidiary, Samsung Corning Glass Works, which manufactured glass screens for televisions; when it merged with Cheil Industries in 1999, the resulting subsidiary became known as Samsung Corning Precision Materials.

What are the good things about Samsung?

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate, meaning that it does business in many different areas. Over 10 years ago, Samsung became one of few corporations in South Korea to publicly trade shares on a stock exchange. The company currently has more than 200 subsidiary companies, including Samsung Electronics (their most profitable branch). Despite these various branches, Samsung has been working hard over the past several years to reduce its dependency on its electronics branch and focus more on other parts of its business—especially pharmaceuticals and automobiles. The company intends to move away from its dependency on electronics by 2022 and start focusing more on developing other products that may be able to succeed even if a decline in electronic devices were observed in 2025. This plan includes an increase in investments into research and development of new technologies as well as expanding into different sectors such as biopharmaceuticals, medical equipment, semiconductors, petrochemicals, telecommunications networks and systems, home appliances, and construction materials, finance/insurance/real estate industries. In 2018 alone they made $4 billion worth of investments into new businesses. This trend will continue for at least five years until 2022 when they expect to have nearly half their revenue coming from non-electronics-related businesses. Their current goal is to make up 25% of their total revenue from non-electronics-related businesses by 2022 which would mean making about $28 billion per year off these other ventures.

Is Samsung a trusted company?

As Samsung adds more and more business units (smartphones, tablets, home appliances, televisions), some investors are worried that it will lose focus and tarnish its reputation. There’s no need to worry just yet—Samsung is still the top dog in many of these businesses. But even Samsung says it’s too dependent on smartphones—that’s why it’s moving into other sectors as well. We won't be surprised if we start hearing rumors about a Samsung takeover bid soon. In fact, we'll be really surprised if they don't make an attempt at Lenovo or Toshiba sometime in 2022. In 2022, we predict: It's unlikely that Samsung will sell off any of its businesses in 2022. Instead, look for acquisitions and mergers with foreign companies like China's Xiaomi, India's Micromax, or Korea's LG Electronics to take over market share from Apple Inc., which has been declining steadily since 2018. More likely than not, however, is a sale or merger between major players like Sony Corp., Panasonic Corp., LG Electronics Inc., Sharp Corp., NEC Corp., and Hitachi Ltd.
